What Is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a type of cosmetic procedure that involves the application of a durable dental resin to reshape teeth. We will apply this tooth-colored resin directly to your child’s tooth, then sculpt and harden it until it looks like part of their natural smile. Bonding is typically used for cosmetic purposes but it can also be used to cover up issues like minor chips in the teeth, gaps in the smile, and small or misshapen teeth.

Is Dental Bonding for Kids?

Yes. Dental bonding is a good option for restoring teeth that have minor chips or damage, and to improve the appearance of your child’s teeth. Typically, it can be used in both primary (baby) teeth and permanent (adult) teeth.

However, dental bonding may not be right for your child if they need orthodontic treatment, like braces or Invisalign. If your child’s teeth require orthodontic correction, it’s typically easier  to simply move the teeth and shift them to the proper position before any cosmetic procedures are performed.

What Can I Expect From the Dental Bonding Process?

Dental bonding takes only a single appointment, and is fast and non-invasive. First, your child’s tooth will be roughened with a special type of acid. This allows the dental resin to hold tightly onto the enamel.

Next, we will apply a tooth-colored dental resin directly to your child’s teeth. Then, we will sculpt it into the proper shape, and harden it with a UV light. Next, we will use a dental drill to trim it down and refine its shape further, until the resin material looks just like a part of your child’s natural tooth. Then, we will buff and polish the tooth. This completes the procedure. It takes only about 30-60 minutes to treat each tooth with bonding.

What Are the Benefits of Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is very affordable, so it’s great if you want to restore your child’s teeth but are on a tight budget. In addition, it is totally non-invasive. In many cases, numbing is not even required, as no natural enamel is removed during the process. Bonding also delivers very fast results, allowing you to restore your child’s mouth in just a single appointment at Willow Pediatric Dentistry.
